RE: Pennsylvania Idling Law

A new state law prohibits a diesel-powered motor vehicle with a gross weight of 10,001 pounds or more, engaged in commerce........... Too bad it doesn't apply to all diesels. Every time I see someone idling their pick-up the whole time they are refueling and/or going inside the store I want to ask them "what's the matter, afraid it won't start back up?"

He treated the symptom, did he fix the problem? Fuses usually do not fail for no reason. Keep you receipt for when the fuse blows the next time.

RE: Dodge CTD smokes on heavy load

Installing a boost gauge will give you a better handle on smoke. Low boost, lots of throttle = smoke. That gauge, coupled with an exhaust temp gauge (pyrometer) are the two best tools you can have to monitor your engine performance and find problems before they become major. Once you learn the combo you can fill thumpin' ricers with smoke when the light turns green.:B

With my 97 Dodge duelly I have found that 65 front and 55 rear give me the best combination of ride and wear. I use Mich LTX M/S load range E and get 120k miles front and 100k rear. I use a quarter to check for tread depth and change them when the top of Washington's head shows. I tow a lot of different trailers of different weights, tag, goose and 5er. If I only towed my 32 ft triple slide every once in awhile I would go with 50 rear unloaded and no more than 60 loaded. The weight on the front doesn't change enough to change pressure on them. (4500 lbs)

You might be able to safely bring the Wildcat to a stop in an emergency. Here's a news flash. Trailers have brakes!!!! Yup, no kidding. More than likely just as capable of stopping the trailer in time as fast as the TV brakes stop the TV in time. Definitely as capable as a 32 footer behind a 1 ton duelly. To the OP, I've towed quite a few new Wildcats out of the factory in Dallas, Or. They are no more over their brochure pin weight than any other brand. The Canadians love them if sales up there are any indication. Compared to the stuff built in SoCal, they are way better.

I don't THINK the guys that deliver RV's need a CDL if their gross weight remains below 26,001 lbs. The guys who deliver RVs (I am one) are required to have a CDL if the total GVWR of their truck and the GVWR of the RV added together exceed 26,000 pounds. Actual weight does not matter (unless of course it exceeds GCWR). This limits me to trailers with GVWRs of 15,500 or less. Some transport companies require a CDL in order to lease with them, period. Drivers who deliver motor homes equipped with air brakes have to have CDLs as well.

Since I use my duelly as a trailer hauler, the lower GVWR of the pickup allows me to pull larger trailers. My GVWR is 10,500 which allows me to pull trailers with GVWRs up to 15,500 and not need a Class A CDL. Some states have the same weight limits for combos whether you are commercial or not. If you live in one of those states a GVWR 11,400 pickup would limit you to a 13,600 gvwr trailer unless you have a Class A CDL. It is for that reason that my next work truck will be a 2500 series. 9000 GVWR will allow me to pull trailers up to 17,000 GVWR and give me more work.

I think a horse trailer with living quarters would be a better option. I pulled one to Montana once that had more living space than any truck camper, but it was a 4 horse IIRC. The added benefit is horse trailers have a lot less drag than a TC giving better mpg.

It could very well be that the motor is turning at it's optimum RPM but the gears are a lower ratio because of the weight of the trailer.

RE: 2004 F350 6.0L Diesel

One of my co-workers has a Ford 6.0 that recently turned over 400k miles. He has had very few problems with it. His trade in on it was a D-Max with just over 300k which had a LOT of problems. He regularly tows trailers up to 16,000 pounds. I doubt it will ever get to the million mile mark like a lot of Cummins have, but it has given him better service than any D-max that I have ever heard of.

RE: What size toy hauler can my truck handle?

I pulled an empty 40 ft toyhauler from LA to northern Canada once with my diesel powered duelly and it was a challenge. I beleive it would only take one trip with your 2500 to convince you that a much bigger truck is what you need. Since you are familier with big trucks I'd say go with a real tractor, not a wimpy pick-up. For about the same money as a new 3500 you could get a used tractor, remove one drive axle and have a truck that would never wear out.

Why? This is RV.net. The less we know about a given subject the more expert we are. Isn't that the truth. One poster assumes that the laws of HIS state apply to other states and another just makes a wild guess at the laws of his state and the facts regarding a situation. Gotta love the internet and all the "experts" it has generated.

This setup is not legal in TX. Here doubles are only allowed if the first trailer has a 5th wheel hitch. Surely he has neither trailer brakes nor concern for anyone else on the road. Completely false. Any double combo is allowed in TX. Tlr brakes are only required on tlrs over 2000 pounds. Since he is using the pick-up bed as a dolly it may not even be considered a tlr and it is possible that the brakes for the stock tlr are hooked up. I once towed a front wheel drive car on a tow dolly behind my 5er from Lubbock to Austin which sent me thru DOT alley in Abilene. I'd bet even money that photo was taken in Dumas, TX. Some of you posters need to lighten up.

Check out this site relating to ULSD additives. Check out the HFRR link within it too. Interesting but I can't comment as to accuracy. I hope not. Can anyone that passed high school chemistry say, with a straight face, that sulphur is anything but a corrosive. I use two cycle oil...........in the two cycle outboard engine that is mounted on my boat. It's primary purpose is to lube the rod and crank bearings before it is drawn into the cylinders during the combustion cycle. I sure wouldn't use sulphur to lube anything. That is one of those internet "experts" I refered to.

......... and lots of old ones have characteristic and well known issues with ULSD. If yours isn't one of those, then great - best of luck for a long life. How old is old? Does a 97 Dodge/Cummins 12 valve qualify? I'll bet with 99% certainty that I burned more ULSD in the last two years than 90% of forum members will burn during the entire ownership of their diesel pickups. 11,560.385 gallons (and that doesn't count trips with my personal boat and/or 5er in tow) to be exact. By the way, just what are those well known issues? I belong to two diesel forums and other than the Chicken Littles, I haven't heard of any proven failures. A lot of conjecture for sure and but no real evidence. FWIW, I do use additives in the winter when I fill my tanks with southern #2 and am on my way north. Cetane boost is a laugh since there is very little real cetane improvement using additives, but gelling is what I'm preventing, or trying to. I never add anything to the fuel I buy up north.

They re-add it to bring it up to the requirements for vehicles DESIGNED for ULSD. If they didn't add any lubricity at all, ULSD would fall below requirements for even ULSD compliant vehicles. If you drive a pre ULSD diesel, or worse yet, one manufactured even before LSD (before ULSD) then you are causing undue wear and tear on your IP by not running a lubricity additive. This is old hat, debating it is foolish. A search of any diesel related website will enlighten you. Bunk. If anything the newer diesels require more lubrication than the old ones because of closer tolerances in the injector pumps and injectors and the multi-stage injection. If your theory held any water my injection pump, injectors and engine would have failed a couple years ago. At 643k miles my injection pump is working just fine. I replaced the original injectors at 570k, not because of failure, because the hundreds of gallons of fuel that had been pumped thru them had enlarged the holes slightly and my mileage was suffering. CA and Canada went to ULSD long before anyone else and no one noticed any difference until some internet "expert" proclaimed the fuel wasn't as good as the LSD. Those same diesel related websites have fools dumping used motor oil, 2 cycle engine oil and ATF into their fuel tanks to "increase lubricity". After reading them I haven't felt enlightened, I just shake my head at how gullible some people are.

RE: Fifth wheel hitch with bedliner

Mine was sprayed prior to the hitch. With it sprayed over the hitch I see a few problems. If you trade and want to keep the hitch you would have big bare spots where the hitch was mounted for one, and none of the spray outfits will just spray small jobs. Also, the metal to metal contact will over time rub thru the paint and start corroding. That corrosion will be hidden by the sprayed coating and the first sign will be the hole under the bed.
